Your intake assessment is the very first step in our journey together. It’s not about paperwork or ticking boxes—it’s about your child. This is where we slow down, listen carefully, and begin to build a picture of what helps your child feel secure and supported during visits.

Every child is different. To understand yours, we ask some personal questions—not to judge, but so we can better support your family’s needs. This includes learning about your child’s routines and interests, as well as the history of your separation. Understanding what has brought your family to this point helps us plan visits that are safe, thoughtful, and supportive for everyone involved.

During the intake, we’ll explore what makes your child feel calm, what sparks their joy, and what might cause them worry. These details guide us in creating an environment that feels familiar and positive—so your child can settle into visits with confidence.

Intakes also give parents space to share their own perspective. Many feel reassured when they realise the whole focus is on their child’s needs. Often, it’s the first time someone has asked, “What helps your child feel safe?” That simple question can ease nerves and remind parents they’re not alone in wanting the best for their child.

One mum told us she was anxious about her upcoming intake, expecting tough questions about her own choices. Beforehand, she listened to our #alwayschildfocused podcast episode about intake assessments. Hearing other parents’ experiences reassured her:“I realised I wasn’t alone, and that it was all about helping my child feel secure.”

When the day came, she found herself talking about her son—what makes him laugh, what helps him feel calm, and how he likes to spend his time. Afterwards she said:“I thought it would be about me. Instead, it was about him—and that made me feel so much better.”
