For many families, supervised contact can feel unfamiliar and overwhelming. In this episode of the #alwayschildfocused Podcast, Jakki shares the story behind Holding Hands and explains how the service was created in response to long waiting lists and a desire to provide children and parents with a more natural, community-based experience.
From playgrounds and libraries to cafés and sports ovals, contact visits are designed to take place in everyday environments where children can spend meaningful time with their parent in a way that feels comfortable and familiar.
The episode also walks listeners through the Holding Hands journey, from referral forms and intake assessments through to child familiarisation sessions and supervised visits. Jakki explains the role of the contact worker, the purpose of visit reports, and the steps taken to help children and parents feel safe and supported throughout the process.
Most importantly, the conversation reinforces that supervised visits are about creating opportunities for children and parents to connect or reconnect, with the goal of helping families move forward and, wherever possible, progress beyond the need for supervision.
